AQUASCAPING 101

1-2:30PM Saturday, February 6th  | Green Brook, NJ

Have you always wanted to create a beautiful planted aquarium but aren’t sure where to begin? Maybe you’ve tried aquascaping in the past and struggled with plant growth, algae, equipment choices, or keeping everything balanced. Or perhaps you’re simply ready to take your aquarium to the next level and want to learn how to do it the right way from the start.

Aquascaping 101 is the perfect class for you!

Join us for an informative, hands-on introduction to the art and science of creating a successful planted aquarium. We’ll walk you through the entire process—from choosing the right equipment and materials to designing your aquascape, selecting plants and livestock, and maintaining a healthy, thriving ecosystem long-term.

Whether you’re building your very first planted tank or looking to understand what went wrong with a previous setup, this class will give you the foundational knowledge and practical tips you need to create an aquascape with confidence.

Topics covered will include:

  • Equipment Choices — Understanding lighting, filtration, heating and the equipment your planted aquarium actually needs.
  • Material Selection — Choosing substrates, stone, driftwood and other materials that work together successfully.
  • Design Elements — Learning the basics of layout, composition, depth, focal points and creating a natural-looking aquascape.
  • CO₂ Setup — When and why to use CO₂, along with the basics of setting up and maintaining a system.
  • Plant Selection — Choosing the right aquatic plants based on your experience level, tank conditions and desired look.
  • Plant Care — Proper planting, trimming, fertilization and ongoing maintenance to encourage healthy growth.
  • Aquarium Cycling — Understanding the nitrogen cycle and how to properly establish your aquarium before adding livestock.
  • Algae Prevention — Identifying common causes of algae and learning how proper lighting, nutrients and maintenance can help keep it under control.
  • Livestock Selection — Choosing fish, shrimp, snails and other inhabitants that complement your aquascape and thrive in your setup.

You’ll leave with a better understanding of how all the pieces of a planted aquarium work together and the knowledge you need to avoid common beginner mistakes.

Come ready to learn, ask questions and start planning an aquascape you’ll be excited to create and maintain!
